Southeast Missouri Behavioral Health is a community based, healthcare provider of substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring disorder treatment services. The agency is certified by the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Division of Behavioral Health as a provider of Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment services and accredited through CARF as a provider of Integrated Alcohol and Other Drug and Mental Health services at all of its locations.

Must either possess or have the ability to possess, within 30 days of hire, the Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) credential through the Missouri Credentialing Board ( A Class E Driver's License is required at the time of hiring or can be obtained within two weeks thereof. Certification in CPR/First Aid is required upon hiring or can be obtained shortly after hiring. Employees are required to maintain the certifications and/or licenses possessed when hired and those gained while an employee of this Agency. Any lapsed certification or license may be grounds for discipline, removal from a position, or termination of employment.

Must pass background check provided for the agency by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Family Care Safety Registry which includes the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Department of Social Services, Department of Mental Health and Department of Health and Senior Services. Must not be on any "do not hire" list with the Department of Mental Health or the Missouri Division of Family Services.


Assist individuals served in their recovery from substance use disorders and/or mental illness. Support, encourage, and model recovery and resilience from substance use disorders and mental illness in ways that are specific to the needs of each individual. Provide individualized person-centered services with a recovery focus. Promote a strengths based model and encourage the use of natural supports and enhanced community living. Assist in achieving goals and objectives set forth by the individual in their individualized treatment or recovery plan. Emphasize the opportunity for individuals to support each other as they move forward in their recovery.

Staff must demonstrate excellence in overall work performance; promote positive morale through a congenial, supportive attitude and by providing service to others; put forth an effort to improve self as well as to develop and recognize others; exhibit initiative, innovation and creativity resulting in improved operating efficiency of their work focus or the agency as a whole; enhance the image of the their department and the agency.

Regular and consistent attendance is an essential job function.


Able to document services appropriately using agency approved formats in an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system. Documenting services that clearly describes the need for the service, the intervention provided, the date, actual time and setting of the service, and the individual's response to the service.

Helping individuals connect with other consumers and their communities at large in order to develop a network for information and support.

Sharing lived experiences of recovery, sharing and supporting the use of recovery tools, and modeling successful recovery behaviors.

Helping individuals to make independent choices and to take a proactive role in their recovery.

Assisting individuals with identifying strengths and personal resources to aid in their setting and achieving recovery goals.

Assisting individuals in setting and following through on goals.

Supporting efforts to find and maintain paid competitive integrated employment.

Assisting with health and wellness activities.

Starting and sustaining mutual support groups.

Promoting dialogues on recovery and resilience.

Teaching and modeling symptom management skills.

Teaching and modeling problem solving skills.

Using the stages in recovery concept to promote self-determination.

Working with clients both in the office and out in the community.

This is not a counseling position or a self-help sponsor role.

Peer Specialists may not function as a sponsor for any current clients.
